Jacqueline shares her experience of accessing TALKWORKS

Jacqueline contacted TALKWORKS following an appointment at her GP surgery. She started treatment and recognised how she could challenge negative thoughts to feel happier in herself. Below, she shares her story:

“Sometimes you find yourself in a really low state and you really don’t know how and when exactly you got there. I was given a leaflet for TALKWORKS at my GP surgery. Eventually, I rang.

As a free NHS service, I found it a brilliant provision. I was referred to Izzy. She was amazing. She listened in a patient, supportive and non-judgemental way. I found I could be really honest, and she was the only person that knew exactly how awful I felt about my life, as I spent considerable effort and time concealing it from my friends and family.

The telephone calls with Izzy provided a lifeline. I learnt about CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and was guided gently through the process. I learnt how to challenge and re-direct my negative thoughts to a more positive approach. I found Izzy an incredible help and support. While much of my struggle was pain related, and I have since had an operation, I did find NHS TALKWORKS a remarkable and positive experience. There are online courses available as well as regular telephone calls.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this service to anyone, especially those who are finding it difficult to accept help and think they can cope alone and are struggling.”
