I am a carer... How can I access support?

Posted by Admin on 19 August, 2024

Taking on a caring role can be challenging both physically and emotionally. From providing emotional support, to personal care and assisting with daily tasks like cooking, cleaning or doing a weekly shop – being a carer comes with a range of responsibilities and challenges. You may experience a variety of emotions in your role as a carer, and the difficulties that you encounter may also be different from what other carers are going through. While at times it may feel isolating or overwhelming, it’s important to remember that you are not alone, and help is available through a service like TALKWORKS.

How can TALKWORKS help me?

TALKWORKS can support adults across Devon (outside Plymouth which is covered by Plymouth Options) who are in a role as a carer for their loved ones.

Our clinicians can help with treating a range of common mental health difficulties which may occur as a result of caring duties, including low mood, worry, stress, anxiety and sleep difficulties. Treatment and support through TALKWORKS is free-to-access and includes:

  • One-to-one sessions with a therapist (face-to-face, over the phone or by video call)
  • Interactive group courses and wellbeing workshops
  • Online self-help (accessible anytime of the day or night)

Waiting times to be seen for an appointment are very short, with early morning and evening appointments available Monday to Friday. You do not need a referral from a GP to access TALKWORKS’ services, you can refer yourself online or over the phone. For more information on the different treatment options and therapy services, please visit the TALKWORKS website or call 0300 555 3344 (our phone lines are open Monday to Friday from 9:00am – 4:45pm).
